What does ten dollars buy on a Saturday morning off Friant Road? At Shinzen Friendship Garden, $10 covers one adult's admission plus the Woodward Park vehicle fee. Tickets for the garden's October 10 Intro to Birding class run $5 to $7. So a morning with a guide costs about the same as a morning on your own.
From now through late November, the garden's calendar reads more like a course catalog than an events page. Most sessions are two hours long, many start at 10 a.m., and almost all fall on Saturday. For anyone living around the Woodward Lake Master Association clubhouse on North Westshore Drive, it is one of the most structured, least crowded ways to spend fall weekends without leaving this stretch of Friant Road.
The Fall Schedule Is Built in Two-Hour Blocks
Shinzen sits inside Woodward Park at 7775 N. Friant Road. Woodward Lake sits near Lakeview Drive and Friant, so the trip runs along Friant to the Woodward Park entrance at Audubon. What's waiting there this season is a run of hands-on workshops, each with a fixed start time, a ticket and a cap on seats.
Here is the garden's posted lineup for the rest of 2026:
| Date | Session | Time | Ticket range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sat., Oct. 10 | Moments Between Leaves writing workshop | 10 a.m.–noon | $25–$35 |

| Sat., Nov. 21 | Volunteer Day | Posted on RSVP page | Free |
The prices span a wide range. The free book club and the $150 tea experience fall on the same weekend, a day apart. That spread lets a household treat the garden as a weekly habit or a once-a-season splurge, using the same calendar either way.
Where the Saturdays collide
The two-hour blocks matter most when two of them overlap. On October 10, the writing workshop and Intro to Birding both run 10 a.m. to noon, so you can only pick one. October 17 is the busiest day on the calendar. Kintsugi runs 10 to noon and the Perspectives photography workshop starts at 11, so they overlap by an hour. The free volunteer day that morning is already listed as full.
November spaces things out better. On November 14, Portrait & Family Photography runs in the morning and The Art of the Kimono in the afternoon, so one person can take both with a lunch break in between. The garden shows remaining seats on each ticket listing. For the smaller sessions, buying early is the only reliable way to get in.
Several Classes Teach Skills You Can Use at Home
The part of this calendar that carries past the garden gate is the craft content. A few sessions teach things you can use the following weekend in your own yard or dining room.
Pruning Japanese Maples, November 7. Steve DaSilva, a Certified Aesthetic Pruner, leads this hands-on session. The garden's listing describes Japanese maples as needing thoughtful pruning to keep their natural branching structure. If you have a maple in a courtyard or along a walkway at home, $20 to $30 for two hours with a specialist costs less than most single visits from a landscape service.
The timing also has history behind it. A 2016 FresYes account of Shinzen's fall festival described the trees in the garden's autumn section, maples included, just beginning to change in early November. That's one past season, not a forecast. Still, it suggests the pruning class may land as the garden's color is starting to show.
Blooms & Tea, October 24. This 1 to 3 p.m. floral arranging session is billed as a celebration of autumn at the garden. It's the most direct way on this calendar to come home with an arrangement for your own table.
Kintsugi, October 17. The garden lists this as a pottery workshop on Kintsugi, which it calls a centuries-old Japanese art built around the beauty of imperfection. At $75 to $90, it ties with Blooms & Tea as the most expensive Saturday class on the list.
Intro to Birding, October 10. This is the cheapest ticketed class and the most portable. The listing frames it around the birds you see and hear in the garden. What you learn about those birds travels with you on any walk near the water back home.
The Free Sessions Run on a Different Rhythm
Four listings cost nothing beyond getting in the door. One of them, the October 17 volunteer day, is already full. The other three are spread across the calendar, so they work like anchors between the paid workshops.
- Seasons of Stories book club, October 17. The October selection is Kokoro by Natsume Soseki. The listing calls it his most famous novel and the last one he completed.
- Art in the Garden, October 25. Local artists show their work along the garden paths as a strolling outdoor gallery.
- Volunteer Day, November 21. Volunteers help with weeding, pruning, planting and seasonal projects. This one still had open spots when the calendar was captured.
The volunteer day connects back to the pruning class. Two weeks after DaSilva's session, the garden asks for hands to help with the same kind of seasonal work.
What the Gate and the Lot Cost This Season
The practical details changed on October 1. From October 1 through March 31, Shinzen is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. Spring and summer hours run until 7 p.m. Garden admission works like this:
- Ages 15 and up pay $5.
- Ages 4 to 14, seniors 62 and older, and students pay $1.
- Children under 4 get in free.
- A family rate covers two to five people for $7.
Woodward Park's vehicle fee is separate. It's $5 on a normal day, $3 with a senior 65 or older in the car, and $7 on holidays. The closest parking is the lot by the garden entrance, where you pay at City of Fresno kiosks.
That parking fee adds up over a season of Saturdays. The City sells a $50 annual parking pass that covers Woodward Park, Roeding Park and the Regional Sports Complex. Qualifying seniors pay $35 and low-income participants $25. At $5 per visit, the standard pass pays for itself on the eleventh trip. If you plan to take four or five fall workshops and come back for spring walks, that's within reach. The garden also offers memberships with unlimited entry, so check its current tiers before buying either.
Tuesday Belongs to River Park Instead
Shinzen is closed on Tuesdays this season, and that's the night the River Park Farmers Market runs, 5 to 9 p.m. at The Shops at River Park, 7753 N. Via Del Rio. The market is free and runs year-round. The market's calendar lists themed nights by weekday and date without printing a year, and each one falls on a Tuesday in 2026. On that calendar, Tuesday, October 6 is a Harry Potter food festival, and October 27 brings a Trick-or-Treat Trail and a family Halloween party. November 3 is a Lord of the Rings feast.
Put the two calendars together and you get a weekly pattern. Shinzen's workshops fill Saturday mornings, and River Park's market fills Tuesday evenings, both within a short drive along Friant Road. As captured, Shinzen's posted calendar ends with the November 21 volunteer day. December programming hadn't been posted yet, so check the garden's events page in November for anything new.
