North Fresno Street between Alluvial and Friant Road is about a mile long. One end is the Kaiser Permanente complex and the other is Park Crossing, the shopping center at the Friant Road corner. For years most of its food came at lunch and dinner. In 2026 the stretch filled in both ends. It now has a 6:30 a.m. pastry case, a focaccia counter that pours wine, soup dumplings made fresh daily and, since summer, a café that stays open until 11 p.m. on weekends without serving any alcohol.
The changes came from separate owners in separate months. Together they give Woodward Lakes a close-to-home route from breakfast to late evening along one street, and the late end of that route is now coffee.

The Morning Starts Near Alluvial
Rumi Coffee soft-opened the weekend of July 31 at 7406 N. Fresno St. In its opening coverage, the Fresno Bee listed hours of 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with prepared food ending at 4 p.m. Those are the hours published at opening. It is worth checking the shop's own channels before an early or late visit.
The shop is the third local business from Hamed Alghazali, who also owns Fabiano Coffee Roasters and opened his bakery, Rumi Baklava, in May. The menu covers traditional espresso drinks and Yemeni mofawar, which Fresnoland describes as coffee steeped in water and then mixed with milk and spices, something between chai and Arabic coffee.
In the mornings, the pastry case is the main reason to stop. Alghazali told Fresnoland that the kunafa comes from Syria and that the case also includes an Armenian borek puff pastry. His pastry chef is Syrian and his baker is Armenian. He also told the outlet that "the three main flavors of Yemen are date, cardamom, and rosewater." The savory side includes a fig labneh toast and a sumac chicken with Palestinian-style spice. Fresnoland's writer also noted that the line slows down because customers reach the counter and start asking what each pastry is. A morning visit means waiting behind those questions.
Lunch Moved North to Park Crossing
At the Friant Road end, Strada Italian Sandwiches opened on Tuesday, April 28, in Park Crossing, next to Annesso Pizzeria. Its menu lists the address as 8492 N. Friant Rd., Suite 101. Local chef Jimmy Pardini owns both Strada and Annesso, along with The Annex Kitchen and Willow Osteria.
The Bee's opening story describes the focaccia as baked in house, with fillings that include mortadella, Tuscan salami and pistachio spread. The bread is sprinkled with olive oil and dusted with sea salt, and the sandwiches use creamy fresh mozzarella.
Strada also added drinks at lunch. When it opened, the Bee said wine and beer were "coming soon," and by June the paper's summer patio roundup confirmed that customers could order wine, Italian beer or a Strada spritz. The patio is small and casual, with red-and-white striped umbrellas.
Two Doors From Rumi, a Broth That Takes a Day
Back at the south end, Dumpling U at 7444 N. Fresno St. sits a few doors from Rumi on the same block. It went into soft opening in January. GV Wire profiled it in March and described handmade soup dumplings made fresh daily, along with noodles, buns and beef rolls.
The xiaolongbao are what set it apart. The manager told GV Wire that the broth inside is boiled for a day, and that diners are meant to sip the broth first, then dip the dumpling in the house vinegar sauce. The restaurant has run split lunch and dinner service since opening, so confirm current hours on its website before a midafternoon visit.
With Rumi and Dumpling U, the Alluvial end of the stretch now has two reasons to stop on the same block, at different times of day.
Dinner at Heirloom Means Planning for the Line
Heirloom is the established anchor of the stretch, at 8398 N. Fresno St., Suite 101. It opened in Park Crossing in 2019. In August, the Fresno Bee reported that repeat customers described waits of 45 minutes or more at the order counter, and that misting fans were running for people standing in line in the August heat.
Heirloom does not take reservations. According to the Bee, the only ways to get a plate are to order ahead or wait in line. On a corridor that now has other options within a mile, that gives two practical ways to handle dinner:
- Order ahead from Heirloom and pick up, which skips the line the Bee described.
- Treat the wait as part of the evening and plan the rest around it, with Rumi open later than any other spot on the stretch.
Heirloom has posted special hours for Halloween. On Saturday, October 31, it will be open from 10:45 a.m. to 8 p.m., and normal hours return November 1. An 8 p.m. close on a Saturday still leaves time to drive to the Alluvial end of the street before Rumi's published 11 p.m. weekend close.
The Bee also reported that a second Heirloom is planned for Clovis, with an opening expected in late 2027 or 2028. Until then, the Park Crossing location is the only one.
The Late Slot Is Coffee on Purpose
Rumi's evening hours are the newest addition to the corridor, and they were planned. Alghazali told Fresnoland that Yemenis have long had coffee shops, but that "we haven't had coffee shops that open until 9 pm, 10 pm, midnight." He described the goal as "providing that non-alcohol late night, for everyone," adding, "We built this space to be a sit-and-linger kind of a space."
The same profile says Alghazali signed the lease in November of last year and designed the room himself, from the furniture to the menu. Fresnoland compared the shop's community focus to coffeehouses such as Kuppa Joy and The Well Coffeehouse.
Under the published hours, coffee and a seat are available until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, while prepared food stops at 4 p.m.
One Park Crossing Storefront Is Changing
Not every change on the stretch is an opening. In a summer roundup of local closures, the Fresno Bee reported that Figaro's Mexican Southwestern Grill was closing its Fresno and Clovis locations after 10 years, both known for the mango salad and tacos. An employee told the paper that the Park Crossing location would probably close in the last week of August. The same report said the Fresno lease was up for renewal at about $12,000 a month in rent, and that the rent would go up. The Bee tied that year's closures to rising rents, wages, food costs and energy bills, and to customers spending less. Figaro's still operates its original location in Tulare and another in Hanford.
That rent figure puts the rest of Park Crossing in context. The tenants drawing attention there in 2026 are Strada, a counter run by a chef whose pizzeria is next door, and Heirloom, which had lines out the door in August. What moves into the Figaro's space is the open question at the Friant Road end.
A 6:30 a.m. coffee counter, a focaccia shop at the corner and a Saturday-night seat a mile away all belong in the description of a home on this street.
